Insight into the strict hierarchy of servants

0 Comments | Leicester Mercury, Jul 28, 2010

LUTTERWORTH: Members of Lutterworth Evening WI were encouraged to join an outing to take place during August.

Four possible places were suggested.

Speaker Wendy Freer gave an insight into the working lives of servants, mainly in the 19th and early 20th century.

There was a strict hierarchy of those in service, from housekeeper to scullery maids for females and house steward or butler down to errand boy on the male side.

Wendy spoke of the type of work undertaken, hours of work and living environment.

Members were reminded that there would be no meeting during August and the meeting, on September 9, would take them on a “Tour Around the World in One Hour”.

Strange Places Valuable Used Books Have Been Found

Strange Places Valuable Used Books Have Been Found by Victor Epand
in Publishing / Book Reviews (submitted 2008-08-28)

Several avid readers might be highly surprised and even out-raged at some of the unusual places that used books, even old classics, have been found in the past. There are some people who really have no respect for literature and the variety of ways that some individuals dispose of their used books that they have around there homes proves this point.

Classic literature titles have been found in such places as dumpsters and the individuals that find these used books simply wonder how they happened to get here. Individuals will often clean out their attics, basements, garages, or homes and come across these books and no longer have any use for them. Instead of taking the time to take them to a thrift store or a used book store, the individual will simply toss the used books into the trash like they are an old watermelon rind.

Unfortunately and surprisingly, an individual was dumpster diving in a dumpster at a school and came up with perfectly good copies of classic literature of titles that included Little Women and Treasure Island. The really sad thing is that not only did these books still make noise as you opened them, which meant they were relatively new, but schools should know better. I am sure that there were students at that school that would have loved to have had those books to own for themselves. The school did not even consider give the books away nor did they consider have any type of book drive either.

One question I have wondered about for a long time is do publishers always destroy every single recalled book or are these books simple passed off to the public at a later date. A book gets recalled when authors claim that they events they write about in their memoirs are true, but actually they have been fictionalized instead. It seems as if this is happening a lot lately and it makes one wonder if this is a simple publicity stunt by the publisher or are these authors simply getting lazy

Although some of the beads

28th July

Although some of the beads had fallen off, the painting possessed a subtle but charming beauty.

A silhouette was made by making a person sit between a paper tacked to a wall and a strong light. When the sitter?s shadow was cast on the paper, the artist traced it. Then, he cut it out and glued it on a board.

The history of silhouettes is a long one that dates all the way back to old Chinese dynasties. After the Renaissance, silhouette making found some fame in Europe, and during the 18th century, it became a widespread hobby when a French artist, Chr?tien, invented a tracing and cutting machine. In the United States the first silhouettes surfaced during the last years of the 18th century and they were called ?shades.? Alongside the figures of society, several shades were made of George and Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Aaron Burr and other notables.

During the next few decades, other methods of making silhouettes developed. One was to cut the outer layer of paper instead of the silhouette and to back it with a dark cloth or gold foil background.

Amish Unaffected By New Health Law

0 Comments | Sunday News; Lancaster, Pa., Mar 28, 2010 | by Jon Rutter

jrutter@lnpnews.com

Most Americans will have to carry health insurance under new federal health care law or risk paying tax penalties – unless they get a “religious conscience” pass.

That’s what the legislation says.

Lawmakers note that “religious conscience” refers to conservative Plain sect groups even though it doesn’t specifically name them.

Members of Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite churches have long eschewed commercial insurance in favor of community fundraisers and church-run health plans.

The landmark health care overhaul signed last week by President Obama promises to eventually cover 32 million uninsured Americans – and impose hundreds of dollars of fines a year on individuals who don’t buy insurance.

House Democrats capped a year-long political struggle Thursday when they passed a so-called “fix-it” measure containing minor revisions.

Currently, said Andrew Wimer, the spokesman for U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts, “It appears the Amish will be exempt on an individual basis.”

On the other hand, Wimer said, the reform language has been “extremely vague” about entities such as Amish-owned businesses.

Under the legislation, businesses that don’t offer health insurance as a benefit will have to pay penalties of $2,000 a year per full-time worker if they have more than 50 workers.

“There’s a lot that’s unclear at this point,” Wimer said. He added that the fog is expected to lift as the legislation is enforced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Internal Revenue Service.

The majority of the health insurance mandates don’t kick in until 2014.

“It could be 2012, it could be 2014 until we see how the details work out,” Wimer said.

The historic legislation has Amish people talking.

“Oh my yes” it does, exclaimed an Amish farmer from Paradise Township, who added that he’s suspicious of the measure. “We’ll wait and see.”

As of last week, Wimer said, no Amish constituents had contacted Pitts’ office with concerns.

Authorities on Plain sect culture say they doubt any big changes are in store for the more than 25,000 Amish children and adults in the area.

For one thing, said Donald B

This early control with the help of a debt refinance loan will make sure that you do not have to pay outrageous rates of interest, late payment charges and fees which will only make your dubious financial condition more complex. Another sound signal that the time has come to find a debt relief loan is when you just make the minimum payment amount for each month and when all of your credit balances go on remaining on the same level even when you are clearing away your monthly payments.

Those of you who own a home have a big advantage over those who of you who do not own a home because they have the alternative of asking for a debt refinance making use of the equity in their house or home.

In China they say: ?Have you already had a meal today?? instead of greeting ? this shows their serious attitude to the process of eating. Feng Shui adherents eat according to Feng Shui too, that?s why they don?t grow fat. This means, they?

- don?t eat in the same place where they cook (if you have no possibility to divide kitchen into 2 zones ? for cooking and eating ? with a screen, then it?s better to eat in other room, except bedroom).

- prefer ceramic crockery

- lay round, octagonal or oval table. These are optimal forms for better assimilation of food, harmony in body and family. A table shouldn?t be made of transparent glass, it disseminates and let pass all good energy.

- eat in the following order: cold collations (potherbs, fish, bird, vegetables), first course (dishes of paste and rice noodle soup), dessert (fruits, cakes, pastries) and alcohol during the whole meal. Don?t be frightened! Chinese people don?t admit any restrictive diets: they eat everything, but in very small bird?s portions.

- increase quantity of portions with the help of ? mirrors! Food, reflected in mirrors, redoubles by sight, and this way a man eats a ?double? portion, and, in fact, doesn?t overeat.

Instead of saying,

28th July

Instead of saying, “I don’t know” say something like, “Let me find out for you”.

Take complete telephone messages. Use a telephone log and get the caller’s name, company name, phone number, who the message is for, and a detailed message. If you’re not sure how to spell the name ask them to spell it out for you. Be sure to get the message to the correct person right away.

Return calls either the same day or within one business day. Nothing is more irritating to a caller than to make a phone call and not have it returned right away.

If you need to put the caller on hold, ask if it’s ok to do that and get back to them right away. Don’t leave people on hold for too long.

Torture killers lose appeal bid

0 Comments | Northern Echo, Jun 26, 2010 | by Catherine Priestley

THREE murderers who tortured a man to death inside their home have lost appeals against the length of their jail terms.

Clare Nicholls, Simon Nicholls and Steven Martin were sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering 35-year- old Andrew Gardner.

Clare Nicholls was jailed for a minimum of 32 years for torturing Mr Gardner, her boyfriend and the father of her fourth child, for weeks before his eventual death in March last year.

Her brother, Simon, was told he will serve at least 25 years and her on-off lover, Steven Martin, received a 20-year minimum custodial sentence for his part in the gruesome killing at the home they all shared in Chilton, County Durham.

All three were given the right to challenge the lengths of their jail term, a combined sentence of at least 77 years, at the Court of Appeal in London.

But Lord Justice Elias, Mr Justice Gross and Mr Justice Foskett yesterday rejected their cases.

Mr Justice Foskett said the trial judge, Judge Peter Fox, had had the benefit of seeing all three in court before deciding who was most culpable.

Following a three-week trial at Teesside Crown Court in January, he had ruled the murder merited a 30-year starting point.

Yesterday, lawyers for all three argued the minimum terms passed by Judge Fox were “manifestly excessive”.

Judge Foskett told the court that Clare Nicholls, originally from Portsmouth, was the instigator and main perpetrator of the horrific violence inflicted on her “shy, placid” partner.

Her brother had often acted as her “enforcer” when Mr Gardner attempted to defend himself and she and Martin compounded their victim’s misery and humiliation by having sex in front of him.

MrGardner, who had learning difficulties, was found dead by paramedics when they were called to the house in Arthur Street, Chilton, on March 13 last year.

He hadmore than 120 injuries, similar to those of a serious crash victim, including 21 rib fractures, bleeding on the brain and blood poisoning.

He had been starved, slashed, whipped, scalded, burnt by being held against a radiator and branded with a cigarette lighter in the weeks before his death.

After serving their minimum terms, the three killers will only get parole if they are no longer considered a danger to the public and would remain on strict licence conditions for life.
