Insight into the strict hierarchy of servants

LUTTERWORTH: Members of Lutterworth Evening WI were encouraged to join an outing to take place during August.

Four possible places were suggested.

Speaker Wendy Freer gave an insight into the working lives of servants, mainly in the 19th and early 20th century.

There was a strict hierarchy of those in service, from housekeeper to scullery maids for females and house steward or butler down to errand boy on the male side.

Wendy spoke of the type of work undertaken, hours of work and living environment.

Members were reminded that there would be no meeting during August and the meeting, on September 9, would take them on a “Tour Around the World in One Hour”.
